Acamprol Tablet

Acamprol Tablet is a prescription medication used as part of a comprehensive treatment program for individuals recovering from alcohol dependence. It is designed to help maintain abstinence in patients who have already stopped drinking, supporting them in their journey to long-term recovery.

Acamprosate works by stabilizing the chemical balance in the brain that is disrupted by chronic alcohol use. Alcohol alters the activity of neurotransmitters like glutamate and GABA, leading to chemical imbalances. After cessation of alcohol, these imbalances can cause withdrawal symptoms and cravings. Acamprosate modulates glutamatergic neurotransmission, helping reduce post-acute withdrawal symptoms such as restlessness, insomnia, and anxiety.

Each tablet contains 333 mg of Acamprosate Calcium and is typically prescribed as two tablets (666 mg) taken three times daily. The medication is most effective when used in combination with psychosocial support, counseling, and behavioral therapy.

Acamprosate is not a cure for alcoholism, but it can significantly improve the chances of long-term abstinence in motivated patients. It does not reduce withdrawal symptoms during detox, nor does it prevent the effects of alcohol if drinking is resumed.
