It belongs to a class of drugs known as DPP-4 inhibitors (dipeptidyl peptidase-4 inhibitors). It is used either as a monotherapy or in combination with other anti-diabetic medications like metformin, sulfonylureas, or insulin to improve glycemic control in adults whose blood sugar levels are not adequately managed by diet and exercise alone.
Alogliptin works by inhibiting the DPP-4 enzyme, which slows the inactivation of incretin hormones. These hormones play an essential role in regulating blood glucose by increasing insulin release and decreasing glucagon levels in the blood, especially after meals. By enhancing the body’s natural hormone activity, Alogliptin helps lower fasting and postprandial blood glucose levels, making it an effective and well-tolerated option for long-term glycemic control.
This medicine is not intended for use in patients with type 1 diabetes or for the treatment of diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA). It is most effective when used alongside a healthy diet and regular exercise. Alogliptin is generally well-tolerated and has a low risk of causing hypoglycemia when not used with insulin or sulfonylureas.
