Dapagliflozin (5 mg) – a Sodium-Glucose Co-Transporter 2 (SGLT2) inhibitor
Metformin (1000 mg) – a Biguanide class antihyperglycemic agent
This combination helps control blood sugar levels in adults with Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM) through complementary mechanisms. Dapagliflozin promotes glucose excretion through the urine, while Metformin reduces glucose production in the liver and improves insulin sensitivity.
Treatment of Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM) in adults
Used when diet, exercise, and either monotherapy or dual therapy do not provide adequate glycemic control
May also be used to reduce the risk of cardiovascular events or progression of kidney disease in eligible patients (based on dapagliflozin’s benefits in some patient populations)
Dual mechanism for better glycemic control:
Dapagliflozin: Increases urinary glucose excretion, lowering blood sugar
Metformin: Decreases hepatic glucose output and increases insulin sensitivity
Weight loss or weight neutral effect (mainly due to dapagliflozin)
Low risk of hypoglycemia when used without insulin or sulfonylureas
Cardiovascular and renal protection potential (dapagliflozin has shown benefits in certain patients)
Improves adherence with convenient fixed-dose combination
Common Side Effects:
Genital fungal infections (more common in females)
Increased urination
Urinary tract infections
Diarrhea, nausea, abdominal discomfort (mainly due to Metformin)
Headache
Less Common / Serious Side Effects:
Lactic acidosis (a rare but serious risk with Metformin, especially in renal impairment)
Dehydration or low blood pressure
Diabetic ketoacidosis (rare, but serious – associated with SGLT2 inhibitors)
Hypoglycemia (more likely when used with insulin or sulfonylureas)
Allergic reactions (rash, itching, swelling – rare)
