Uses: Hydroxena 500mg Capsule is primarily used for:

  • Cancer Treatment: Effective in treating certain cancers, including chronic myeloid leukemia, ovarian cancer, and head and neck cancers (excluding lip) when used with concurrent chemoradiation. It works by inhibiting DNA synthesis, slowing or stopping cancer cell growth.
  • Sickle Cell Anemia: Reduces the frequency of painful crises and the need for blood transfusions by increasing fetal hemoglobin (HbF) levels, which helps red blood cells maintain a normal shape and improves blood flow.
  • Bone Marrow Disorders: Treats conditions like polycythemia vera and essential thrombocythemia by controlling abnormal blood cell growth.

Dosage and Administration:

  • The dosage is individualized based on the patient’s condition, response to treatment, and medical history, as determined by a healthcare professional.
  • Taken orally, with or without food, typically once daily or as prescribed (e.g., once every third day for certain cancers). Consistency in timing is recommended for optimal benefits.
  • Capsules should be swallowed whole. If swallowing is difficult, the contents may be dissolved in a small amount of water in a teaspoon, swallowed immediately, and followed by a glass of water. Do not crush, chew, or open the capsules to avoid exposure to the powder.
  • Wear disposable gloves when handling the capsules to avoid skin contact, and wash hands before and after use. Spilled powder should be cleaned with a damp disposable towel and disposed of in a sealed container.

Side Effects:

  • Common: Nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, mouth sores, diarrhea, hematological disorders (e.g., low blood cell counts), gastrointestinal symptoms, and weight loss. These may improve as the body adjusts.
  • Serious: Bone marrow suppression (leading to infections, bleeding, or anemia), increased risk of leukemia or skin cancer with long-term use, cutaneous vasculitic toxicities (e.g., ulcerations, gangrene), and severe pancreas, liver, or nerve problems, especially when combined with certain HIV medications (e.g., didanosine, stavudine).
  • Other: Dizziness, drowsiness, and skin changes. Patients should avoid driving or operating heavy machinery if these occur.

Precautions:

  • Contraindications: Not suitable for patients with hypersensitivity to hydroxyurea or excipients, marked leukopenia (<2.5x10^9/L), thrombocytopenia (<100x10^9/L), or severe anemia.
  • Pregnancy and Breastfeeding: Unsafe during pregnancy due to potential fetal harm; effective contraception is required for women (for at least 6 months post-treatment) and men (for at least 1 year post-treatment). Breastfeeding is not recommended as the drug may pass into breastmilk.
  • Monitoring: Regular blood tests are required to monitor blood cell counts, liver, and kidney function. Use with caution in patients with kidney or liver disease; dose adjustments may be needed.
  • Drug Interactions: Avoid concomitant use with certain antiretroviral drugs (e.g., didanosine, stavudine) due to risks of pancreatitis, hepatotoxicity, and neuropathy. Inform your doctor of all medications, including vaccines, as live vaccines should be avoided. Hydroxyurea may interfere with continuous glucose monitoring results.
  • Other: Use sunscreen and protective clothing to reduce skin cancer risk. Avoid exposure to infections due to lowered immunity.

Storage: Store below 30°C in a dry place, away from moisture and heat. Keep out of reach of children.
