It belongs to the class of imidazole antifungals and works by stopping the growth of fungi responsible for conditions like tinea (ringworm), athlete’s foot, jock itch, and seborrheic dermatitis.
The cream is usually white or off-white, applied topically, and comes in a 50 g tube.
Ketoconazole 2% w/w is a potent topical antifungal agent that plays a critical role in managing various fungal infections of the skin. Its primary mechanism involves inhibiting the enzyme lanosterol 14α-demethylase, which is essential for the synthesis of ergosterol, a vital component of fungal cell membranes. Without ergosterol, the integrity of the fungal cell membrane is compromised, leading to increased permeability, leakage of cellular contents, and ultimately fungal cell death. This targeted action makes Ketoconazole highly effective against dermatophytes (the fungi responsible for tinea infections), yeasts like Candida, and Malassezia species that contribute to seborrheic dermatitis.
Beyond its antifungal activity, Ketoconazole also exhibits mild anti-inflammatory effects, which help reduce redness, itching, and irritation associated with fungal infections. When formulated at 2% w/w in a topical cream, it ensures adequate local concentration at the infection site while minimizing systemic absorption, making it a safe and effective option for treating superficial fungal infections.
