Oxinol Cream 20gm

Oxinol Cream is an antifungal medication containing oxiconazole nitrate, an imidazole derivative with broad-spectrum antifungal activity. It is a white to off-white, opaque cream designed for topical dermatologic use. The cream works by inhibiting ergosterol biosynthesis, which is essential for fungal cell membrane integrity, thereby killing or preventing the growth of fungi.

Indications: Oxinol Cream is used to treat fungal skin infections, including:

• Tinea pedis (athlete’s foot)
• Tinea cruris (jock itch)
• Tinea corporis (ringworm)
• Tinea versicolor (pityriasis versicolor), a fungal infection causing lightening or darkening of the skin on the neck, chest, arms, or legs.

Mechanism of Action: Oxiconazole nitrate disrupts fungal cell membranes by inhibiting ergosterol synthesis, leading to fungistatic (growth inhibition) or fungicidal (fungus-killing) effects. It is effective against dermatophytes such as Trichophyton rubrum, Trichophyton mentagrophytes, Trichophyton tonsurans, and Epidermophyton floccosum, as well as Malassezia furfur (causing tinea versicolor). It also shows in vitro activity against Candida albicans and other fungi, though clinical efficacy for these is less established.

Dosage and Administration:

• For tinea pedis, tinea cruris, and tinea corporis: Apply to the affected area and surrounding skin once or twice daily for 2 weeks (tinea pedis may require 1 month to reduce recurrence).
• For tinea versicolor: Apply once daily for 2 weeks.
• Application Instructions:
  • Clean and thoroughly dry the affected area.
  • Apply a thin layer of cream to cover the affected area and some surrounding skin, then rub in gently.
  • Wash hands before and after application (if treating hand infections, wash only before).
  • Avoid contact with eyes, nose, mouth, or vagina. Rinse with water if accidental contact occurs.
  • Do not cover the treated area with airtight bandages unless directed by a doctor.
  • Continue use for the full prescribed duration, even if symptoms improve, to prevent recurrence.
  • If no improvement is seen after 2–4 weeks, consult a doctor.

Pharmacokinetics:

• Skin Penetration: Oxiconazole penetrates well into the skin. Five hours after applying 2.5 mg/cm², concentrations are 16.2 μmol in the epidermis, 3.64 μmol in the upper corium, and 1.29 μmol in the deeper corium.
• Systemic Absorption: Low, with less than 0.3% of the applied dose detected in urine up to 5 days post-application.
• No significant difference in activity between cream and lotion formulations has been established.

Contraindications:

• Hypersensitivity to oxiconazole nitrate or any component of the cream.
• Not for ophthalmic (eye) or intravaginal use.

Precautions:

• For external use only. Avoid applying to eyes, mouth, or mucous membranes.
• Discontinue use if signs of sensitivity, chemical irritation, or epidermal irritation occur, and consult a doctor.
• Inform your doctor if you are pregnant, planning pregnancy, or breastfeeding, as safety data is limited (Pregnancy Category B; use only if clearly needed).
• Not recommended for children under 12 for athlete’s foot or jock itch unless prescribed, but may be used for ringworm in children over 2 if directed by a doctor.
• Avoid using other topical products on the treated area unless approved by a doctor, as they may affect absorption or efficacy.

Side Effects:

• Common: Burning, stinging, itching, redness, irritation, dryness, or flaking at the application site (usually mild and transient).
• Uncommon but Serious: Severe blistering, oozing, open sores, or allergic reactions (e.g., rash, swelling, difficulty breathing). Seek immediate medical attention if these occur.
• Most side effects resolve over time, but persistent or worsening effects should be reported to a doctor.

Overdose:

• No human overdoses have been reported. Overapplication may increase side effects but does not improve results.
• If swallowed, contact a poison control center (US: 1-800-222-1222; Canada: 1-844-764-7669) or seek emergency care (call 911 for severe symptoms).

Storage:

• Store at room temperature (15–30°C or 59–86°F).
• Do not freeze.
• Keep tightly closed and out of reach of children.
• Discard after the expiration date (typically 2 years from manufacture, but check packaging).
