It is used to temporarily numb the surface of the eye before eye examinations, diagnostic procedures, and minor ophthalmic surgeries. The drops provide rapid pain relief by blocking nerve signals from the eye, making procedures such as measuring eye pressure, removing foreign bodies, or taking corneal samples more comfortable. These drops are intended only for use by an eye care professional and are not meant for long-term pain relief or self-medication.
Paracain Eye Drops play a crucial role in providing temporary local anesthesia of the eye during ophthalmic examinations and minor surgical procedures. The active ingredient, Proparacaine, works by blocking voltage-gated sodium channels in the nerve endings of the cornea and conjunctiva. This prevents the transmission of pain signals from the eye to the brain, producing rapid but temporary numbness without affecting consciousness. The anesthetic effect begins within 30 seconds and generally lasts for 10–20 minutes, making it ideal for short diagnostic and therapeutic procedures.
These eye drops are commonly used before procedures such as tonometry (measurement of eye pressure), removal of foreign bodies, corneal scraping, suture removal, gonioscopy, and other minor ophthalmic interventions. By preventing pain and discomfort, Proparacaine allows the ophthalmologist to perform procedures safely and accurately while improving patient comfort. Since the cornea loses its protective pain sensation during anesthesia, patients should avoid rubbing the eye or exposing it to dust or injury until normal sensation returns. Repeated or unsupervised use is not recommended, as it can delay corneal healing, increase the risk of infection, and potentially cause permanent damage to the cornea.
