Primarily used to treat hypothyroidism (underactive thyroid gland), a condition where the thyroid gland does not produce sufficient thyroid hormones (T3 and T4). It is also used to manage goiter, certain thyroid disorders, thyroid cancer, and to suppress thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) levels. It may be used as a diagnostic tool in thyroid function tests.

How It Work

THIROACE 62.5 mcg Tablet contains Levothyroxine, a synthetic version of the thyroid hormone thyroxine (T4). Once ingested, it is absorbed and converted into triiodothyronine (T3), the active thyroid hormone. T3 regulates metabolism, energy production, body temperature, heart rate, blood pressure, growth in children, brain function, and nutrient absorption by interacting with DNA to control gene expression and protein synthesis. This restores normal thyroid function, alleviating symptoms of hypothyroidism such as fatigue, weight gain, depression, and cold intolerance.

Indications

  • Treatment of hypothyroidism (low thyroid hormone levels).
  • Prevention of goiter (enlarged thyroid gland).
  • Management of thyroid cancer (as adjunctive therapy).
  • Suppression of TSH levels in specific conditions.
  • Diagnostic use in thyroid function tests.

Dosage and Administration

  • Adults: The initial dose is typically based on body weight and adjusted according to thyroid function tests (TSH, T3, T4 levels). The usual starting dose for hypothyroidism is 25–100 mcg daily, with increments of 25–50 mcg every 4–6 weeks until optimal levels are achieved. The 62.5 mcg dose is often used for fine-tuning.
  • Children: Dosage is based on age, body weight, and thyroid hormone levels. For newborns/infants with congenital hypothyroidism, the initial dose is 10–15 mcg/kg/day for the first 3 months, adjusted thereafter based on blood tests.
  • How to Take:
    • Take orally on an empty stomach, preferably 30–60 minutes before breakfast, with a glass of water.
    • Swallow the tablet whole; do not chew, crush, or break it.
    • Take at the same time daily for consistent results.
    • Avoid taking with antacids, calcium/iron supplements, or multivitamins within 4 hours, as they may reduce absorption.
  • Missed Dose: Take the missed dose as soon as remembered unless it’s close to the next dose. Do not double the dose.
  • Overdose: Overdose may cause symptoms like palpitations, fever, chest pain, irregular heartbeat, muscle cramps, headache, restlessness, flushing, sweating, or diarrhea. Seek immediate medical attention if overdose is suspected.
