It contains Moxifloxacin 0.5%, a broad-spectrum antibiotic that effectively kills many bacteria responsible for eye infections. It helps relieve symptoms such as redness, swelling, irritation, pain, sticky eye discharge, and watering while eliminating the infection. Vigamox is prescribed only for bacterial infections and is not effective against viral or fungal eye infections. The medicine should be used exactly as directed by your ophthalmologist, and the full course should be completed even if symptoms improve early to prevent bacterial resistance and recurrence of infection. Maintaining proper eye hygiene and avoiding touching or rubbing the infected eye can further support recovery and reduce the spread of infection.
Moxifloxacin 0.5% is a broad-spectrum fluoroquinolone antibiotic that plays an important role in treating bacterial eye infections. It works by inhibiting two essential bacterial enzymes, DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV, which are required for bacterial DNA replication, repair, and cell division. By blocking these enzymes, Moxifloxacin prevents bacteria from multiplying and ultimately destroys them, helping clear the infection. It is effective against many Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria commonly responsible for bacterial conjunctivitis and other superficial eye infections. As the bacterial load decreases, symptoms such as redness, swelling, pain, discharge, irritation, and excessive tearing gradually improve.
Because the medicine acts directly at the site of infection, it provides high local antibiotic concentrations with minimal absorption into the bloodstream. Completing the entire prescribed course is essential to fully eliminate bacteria, prevent recurrence, and reduce the risk of antibiotic resistance. Good eye hygiene further supports healing and limits transmission of infection.
